Plein Air - Night Cattail Painting

Remember a while ago when I was telling you about the Eagle, Idaho Plein Air Art Festival? I told you all about my massive night painting fail! (read all about that adventure here)

Well, here’s what I actually ended up painting!

Umbra - acrylic painting of cattails at night, highly textured

These cattails were painted during the Eagle Plein Air 2021 Festival Nocturne. Every bit of this painting was done outdoors after sunset, hence the name ‘Umbra’ which means shadow or darkness. You can feel the quiet, crisp autumn air next to the pond where they grew. The layers in this painting are thick and full of texture as they pick up the light shining into the reeds.
